Abstract
Looking at Burgess’s life and work pre-1966 (when Burgess first visited the United States), it is argued that Burgess had a strong cultural influence from America even as an early writer that began back in Manchester but really accelerated during World War Two. His earlier novels are assessed based on their American components and help to provide a strong foundation of American influence that increases significantly in the second half of his career.
