Abstract

This chapter examines the development and implementation of a local ‘well-being strategy’ in New Zealand. It places well-being within a wider political and social context and illustrates how both the interpretation and application of the concept are shaped by context. It describes in political terms the promotion of well-being in ‘third way’ New Zealand as part of a move away from conservative, neoliberal ideology towards a more inclusive social democratic approach. It notes that this is intended to involve building the capacity of individuals and reconstructing community relations, while retaining market reforms. It explains that ‘local’ well-being is achieved through partnership, with a range of local and national actors working in collaboration to improve communities.
