Self-propagation high-temperature sintering of the Ti–Al–C-diamond/BN system

Abstract

A mixture of Ti, Al, C, diamond, or c-BN powder was used as the raw material for the fabrication of a titanium aluminum carbide matrix-bonded diamond/c-BN composite using self-propagation high-temperature synthesis. The phase composition and microstructure of the reacted products were analyzed via X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The addition of diamond did not inhibit the synthesis of titanium aluminum carbide in the sintered product. The diamond and this matrix exhibited good bonding. However, c-BN reacted with Ti and Al in the Ti–Al–C–BN system, which resulted in the formation of small amounts of titanium aluminum carbide. TiC, TiN, and Ti(C,N) matrix-bonded diamond/c-BN composites were obtained.
