Un revenant sur le site de l’antique Gitana (Thesprôtie). Le ‘district macédonien’

Résumé

En 2011, nous avions mis en exergue que le ‘district’ macédonien était une hypothèse qui remontait au milieu du XIXe siècle. Selon nous, l’examen des données – notamment épigraphiques, conduisait à revenir de cette hypothèse. Or, en 2020, Hatzopoulos affirma que des découvertes archéologiques assureraient, a contrario, l’indubitable existence de cette structure administrative de la Macédoine hellénistique. La reprise de détail de ces données de terrain montrera que, bien au contraire, celles-ci ne livrent absolument aucun argument pouvant soutenir l’hypothèse traditionnelle. Ledit ‘district’ macédonien demeure donc un fantôme dont il semble bien vain de défendre la réalité historique.

Summary

In 2011, I pointed out that the so-called “Macedonian District” was a hypothesis dating back to the mid-19th century. I argued that the examination of data – especially epigraphic – justified abandoning this hypothesis. In 2020, however, Hatzopoulos claimed that, on the contrary, archaeological discoveries confirmed the undoubted existence of this administrative structure of Hellenistic Macedonia. A detailed review of these field data shows that they provide absolutely no argument to support the traditional hypothesis. The Macedonian ‘district’ thus remains a ghost whose historical reality seems futile to defend.
