Abstract
This paper deals with a notorious interpretive crux of Alcman’s Louvre-Partheneion: the identity of the Πεληάδες and the meaning and function of the φᾶρος. The article attempts to make sense of the debated verses in their context, highlighting Alcman’s subtle praise of human beings against the foil of the divine.
