Abstract

This article argues for a connection between Sappho’s ‘Charaxus Poem’ and Horace C.1.9.9-12. Horace’s lines rework the third stanza of Sappho’s poem, with consequences both for how Horace presents himself in this poem, and for his wider relation to the Lesbian poets.
