Inflectional classes in Istriot: a first systematisation in diachrony and synchrony
-
Alberto Giudici
Abstract
This study investigates noun inflection in the Istriot variety of Sissano [Cr. Šišan] in Istria (Croatia), drawing on data from the Vocabolario etimologico e fraseologico del dialetto di Sissano d’Istria [Etymological and Phraseological Dictionary of the Dialect of Sissano]. It offers the first comprehensive overview of the inflectional classes attested in this dialect, analyzing the quantitative distribution of nouns across the various classes while integrating comparative data from other Istriot varieties. Furthermore, the study examines diachronic developments, emphasizing how the synchronic linguistic framework has been shaped by interaction with other regional varieties, particularly Istro-Venetan. By combining synchronic and diachronic perspectives, this contribution sheds light on the dynamic processes of linguistic evolution and contact in the Istrian region.
