Gender Parity Towards Access and Use of ICT in Academic Libraries in Nigeria

  • Ojo Jacob Olanrewaju , Ahmed Muhammed , Adamu Abdullahi Muhammed und Hussaini Mairiga

Abstract

This chapter discusses a key area of concern, gender disparity in ICT usage in Nigerian academic libraries. In an era where ICT is integral to educational advancement and research, ensuring equitable access for both genders is essential to fostering inclusive development and achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Although the ICT infrastructure has greatly improved, the structures within the Nigerian society continue to disadvantage women and girls, hence denying them a fair chance to utilize the resources to overcome the gaps within their education, and career. This chapter aims to understand the general causes of such gender disparities such as socio-cultural factors, institutional policies, and educational practices. From a comprehensive review of relevant literature, evidence-based and case-study approaches, this chapter explores the prospects and issues that relate to enhancing the gender perspective in the context of the access to and use of ICT in academic libraries. The chapter also shows how academic libraries are poised to combat these disparities through efforts such as interventions, policies, and community engagement initiatives. In this chapter, concrete steps and plans are provided for stakeholders so that they can be role models and help attain the gender balance in the use and application of ICT in academic libraries. This will not only improve the education shown to women and girls but also make a positive impact on gender equality and the achievement of sustainable development in Nigeria. The findings presented in this chapter are expected to help policymakers, educators, and library professionals on how to enhance the availability of ICT resources to promote an equitable education environment for disadvantaged students.
