Beyond Information Access: Libraries as Centers of Metaliteracy in the 21st Century

Abstract

Metaliteracy is a comprehensive approach that redefines information literacy within the context of a swiftly evolving digital environment. It highlights the need for learners to not only consume information but also create it, allowing them to effectively traverse the intricacies of information in an interconnected world. This strategy is becoming more and more important as society confronts difficulties like misinformation and deception which are especially pertinent in the era of fake news. Hence, libraries play a crucial role in advancing metaliteracy by providing users with the essential abilities to analyze and generate information critically. By incorporating metaliteracy into library services, institutions can strengthen their position as reliable sources of knowledge while also adjusting to technological progress and the demands of society. Incorporating diverse literacies such as media, digital, and AI into library programs can greatly enhance society’s comprehension and involvement. This chapter discusses the new metaliteracy approach and its potential for expansion into diverse library projects, where future investigations should focus on the expansion of metaliteracy programs to further strengthen the role of libraries in the rapidly changing information world.
