ChatGPT and the Future of Library Reference Services

Abstract
The objective of this chapter is to expose the emergence of ChatGPT and the possibility of exploiting ChatGPT for library reference services to increase users’ satisfaction. This chapter also explores the benefit of ChatGPT and the issues that arise when it is implemented in library reference services. ChatGPT is a very sophisticated AI chatbot and is a useful reference tool for librarians to support their expertise and skill in information literacy and research support. ChatGPT, which integrates with the digital library, brings new experiences for library users. Thus, in the future, reference services and librarians can excel their work by utilizing the ChatGPT or AI based-chatbot and filling the gap that AI cannot do. However, some issues must be considered when using GPT: copyright, authorship, legal matter, transparency, data validity, and innovativeness. ChatGPT is a new AI product worth studying from many perspectives. Some studies about ChatGPT have been from the education, health, and business field. However, the perspective of library services is still lacking.
