Abstract
Due to the importance of information literacy in academia and instructional activities in libraries and information centers, the study argued the information literacy history and background by a close look at the definitions and standards by ALA, CILIP, and UNESCO. Information literacy and competencies were also analyzed and compared according to major authors and research. There is no doubt that Information literacy has a significant influence in library instructions; thus, a literature review on various library instructions in academia by emphasizing the role of information literacy was also investigated. Another important factor is the different methods of teaching information literacy in library instruction that should take into account various models and programs. Academic librarians’ role in instructing information literacy should not be neglected, as they are considered the absolute mediators and liaisons in academia by having a mutual collaboration with faculties and researchers. Future research and suggestions in the fields of information literacy and library instruction were also proposed.
