Digital Silent Rooms and Libraries in France During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Enacting Intimate Study Environments
-
Clément Bert-Erboul
Abstract
The library serves as a space for study and reading, extending the private sphere of users beyond their domestic environment. This intertwining of public and private spaces became especially evident during the COvID-19 pandemic, as livestreamed silent study sessions gained online popularity. What do these study videos reveal about users’ relationships with the physical spaces of libraries? This investigation, based on the observation of online spaces and remote interviews, reveals a strong demand for maintaining work conditions outside of the home, despite the availability of digital alternatives. These alternatives demonstrated a somewhat idealized vision of work activity, characterized by certain forms of co-presence, the establishment of routines, socialization among peers, and the sharing of implicit work rules.
