Abstract

This compressed reaction to B. McCormack’s book, The Humility of the Eternal Son, made necessary by the limited space available, undertakes the task entering critically into its evaluation of E. Jüngel’s Christological starting-point. This unfolds initially through a twofold line of questioning: 1) in what does McCormack’s critique of Jüngel consist? and 2) why does McCormack, in order to give profile to his own starting-point, distance himself from Jüngel’s theology? A third question presents itself on the basis of the preceding questions: whether the attempt to pass critically beyond Jüngel, serves McCormack’s concerns well. The last question can, without claiming to do justice to the entire work of McCormack on the basis of this brief discussion, only be hinted at.
