Abstract

The paper explores aspects of the Italo-Iberian linguistic contact in the late Middle Ages, chiefly by interrogating diplomatic sources. The chosen context is the Kingdom of Naples and, more widely, the Crown of Aragon in the second half of the fifteenth century. I will try to shed light on the dynamics of the interference through a comparison with the so-called “filologia mercantile”, based on both philological and linguistic observations. The analysis is based on the texts written in Italian vernacular by native Iberian speakers, particularly those written abroad, far from the Kingdom. I will further analyze the uses of “Italian” in Catalan- Aragonese chanceries and as a vehicular language of international diplomacy.
