Japanische Interpunktion im Wandel der Zeit
-
Michaela Oberwinkler
Abstract
In this article, the history of Japanese punctuation is divided into four phases. The first phase shows how the earliest texts in Japan were structured by numbering, line separation or brushwork. The second phase is determined by reading aids for texts written with Chinese characters only. The periods and strokes added to make the Chinese texts easier to understand can be seen as preforms of later punctuation. The third phase was triggered by increased contacts with the West. It can be characterized by a differentiating use of punctuation and the Japanese draft laws on punctuation. While these government guidelines provide some clues by giving many examples, the final decisionwhether to use punctuation marks remains unclear, especially in the case of the Japanese comma. Finally, the fourth phase describes the current situation in digital communication, inwhich traditional punctuation is often replaced by emoticons and other graphic elements.
