Abstract

This article offers an interpretation of fundamental changes in (German) punctuation theory in the context of cultural and language history. In the first step, punctuation is compared to alternative means of text segmentation. In the second step, it is shown how the historical transformation from the Ciceronian style to the Senecan style had an impact on the status of punctuation. Finally, the article discusses some technical and cultural implications of this interpretation.
