Abstract

This article takes the so-called ‚Lienzo de Quauhquechollan‘ as a starting point to reflect on forms of reference of conquest agency. The aim is first to trace the presence of horses in Mesoamerican pictorial narratives of conquest campaigns. This change of perspective will contribute to an entangled history of the Iberian expansion in the 16th century by not only re-evaluating Spanish and ‚indigenous‘ actors, but also including non-human actors and their integration into conquest narratives. In a second step, it will be asked what consequences this transatlantic history of entanglements had for the contemporary interpretation of the high and late medieval so-called ‚reconquista‘. Only against the backdrop of this interpretive foil can it become clear how the self-fashioning of conquistadors - again with the inclusion of their equine conquest companions - is to be reclassified.
