Abstract

The contribution aims at examining central aspects of the Catalan-Aragonese conquest of the Sharq al-Andalus in the first half of the 13th century from the perspective of the Muslim communities (aljamas). On the basis of two main sources, the ‚Llibre dels feits‘ of King James I of Aragon and the ‚Cartes de Poblament‘, the following main questions will be addressed: Which scopes of action opened up for the communities and their respective leaders in the course of the events? Were they in the position to make demands towards their future overlords in the newly formed Christian Kingdom of Valencia? If so, which means did the Muslims employ in order to assert these demands? Were their efforts successful or were they eventually forced to fully submit to the conquerors’ will?
