Although medieval conquest is a current topic, the perspectives of conquered populations have not yet been examined systematically. But it is precisely their perception that is constitutive for understanding conquest, as the conquered actively shaped the process of upheaval too. By taking a broad chronological and geographical approach, this volume focuses on presenting the experience, coping strategies, and agency of conquered peoples.
