Abstract

After a military victory, it was important to win (at least) the acceptance not only of the conquered people as such but especially of the nobility to void rebellion and resistance. The English king Edward I conquered Wales in 1284 and Scotland in 1305. The study of the English administration in both countries after the end of these wars shows the limits of medieval occupation as well as the possibilities of the defeated English adversaries to pursue their interests under foreign administration. The argument is here that the practice of administration and the consideration of specific requests of the subjected are an important factor for their appreciation of the new regime.
