Abstract

This chapter describes several applicative constructions (ACs) in two Otomanguean language families, Otomi (Otopamean, Western Otomanguean) and Zapotec (Zapotecan, Eastern Otomanguean). As both families are highly diverse internally, a wide range of morphological and syntactic phenomena can be observed in their ACs. With respect to morphology, Zapotec languages tend to mark ACs via concatenative morphology, whereas Otomi makes use of cumulative exponence, stem alternations and, arguably, lexical alternations. With respect to syntax, we observe a close correlation between (non-)promotional constructions and extraction (~ wh-movement). Furthermore, applicative morphology is also found in constructions that display a promotion/ non-promotion continuum, both within a single language (e.g., Northern Zapotec) and among different language varieties (e.g., Otomi languages).
