Abstract
Romanian discourse markers (DMs) are presented from a diachronic and synchronic perspective taking into account the results of the current state of research. The inventory of Romanian DMs includes items which are inherited from Latin, produced through pragmaticalization processes, and borrowed from other languages. The classification of Romanian DMs into several empirical classes is based on the discourse levels at which they prototypically function. Interference with other types of pragmatic units (modal and evidential markers, presentatives, general extenders) is discussed. The last part of the chapter is dedicated to a case study of the verb vedea ‘see’ out of which a ‘family’ of DMs characterized by the evolution from subjective to intersubjective meaning has emerged.
