18 Discourse markers in Catalan
Abstract
Discourse markers are used in all languages. Although some languages may have features in common due to a shared origin, the discourse markers used in each of them may vary. The use and form of these units have to be analyzed in-depth to obtain a general perspective for each language and, thus, to offer the possibility for researchers to compare them. In this context, the aim of this chapter is to compile the most significant studies to date on discourse markers in Catalan and focus on their main contributions. We highlight different studies related to the definition, categorization, and typology of discourse markers in Catalan. Moreover, we analyze publications on the main types of discourse markers in this language, such as reformulation markers, contrastive markers, and other markers. Finally, as a case study, we present a comparison between some discourse markers used in specialized texts written in Catalan and those employed in general texts.
