10 Discourse markers and genre

Abstract
This contribution presents results on addressing discourse markers and genre (specifically, register). This contribution is divided into two main parts: first, a theoretical framework on variation and Romance languages. This study is focused on Romance language approaches to stylistic variation - diaphasic variation in Coseriu (1958) -, and on the relationship among discourse markers, register, and genres in different Romance languages. Second, a corpus study on register and Spanish discourse markers. The departure point of this study is the information retrieved from the Diccionario de Particulas Discursivas del espanol, DPDE (Briz/Pons Borderia/Portoles 2008). This database allows for quantifying differences in register in 107 discourse markers. Results show a quantification of discourse markers in relation with register, discourse units, and functions leading to a global map of polyfunctionality in Peninsular Spanish. The main result obtained is that there is a clear influence of register in the functional spectrum of discourse markers, which is statistically supported.
