Abstract

In this chapter, Spanakis examines the fantasy for young male bodies and the pederastic gaze in Rhianus’ epigrams. First, he considers the limited biographical data about Rhianus as a palaestrophylax and his relationship with the gymnasium and the athletes. Second, he presents the current approaches and arguments of scholarship about Greek homosexuality and especially the erotic gaze of older men for young male boys. Third, he examines two main motifs traced in Rhianus’ short poems, which are the Graces that bestow beauty upon young ephebes and hunting as an amatory game between the erastēs and the erōmenoi. He concludes that Rhianus’ description of the erotic gaze is perceived in the context of his social status as an older male, an erastēs, who admires pubescent male beauty and uses his poetry to vividly convey this beauty as an object of desire and an unfulfilled pathos.
