Abstract

Documentary papyri that originate from Greco-Roman Egypt contain plenty of attestations concerning sex in failed marriages, and specifically its use as a form of domestic violence against women. This contribution aims to feed the discussion on this topic through the analysis of two well-preserved narratives from late antique Oxyrhynchus, namely P.Oxy. VI 903 (4th cent. AD), and P.Oxy. L 3581 (4th-5th cent. AD). The particular interest of the documents in question lies in the fact that they were both written by women, who narrate in a rather emotional manner their traumatic experiences as victims of corporal and psychological violence. Τhe recipients of their narratives are asked to restore justice as representatives of the law. Οur focus is, first, on the implicit references to the involvement of women in non-consensual sexual contacts, as well as to some aspects of sexual deceit; and second, on the personality traits of both the victimised women and the men-abusers. The two selected narratives are placed in their historical and philological context and are compared to other texts - mostly of documentary nature - that deal with the same topics.
