Abstract

This chapter examines several scenes in which we see either group sex or a male figure watching others having sex. These scenes typically involve both a bearded and unbearded male figure with a nude female between them, suggesting that sex with a prostitute or flute girl could be a social activity enjoyed together by erastēs and erōmenos. These scenes should not be interpreted as satirical depictions of debauchery and excess, but as titillating conversation pieces inviting the viewers’ hermeneutics. Whether sexual pedagogy or unabashed hedonism, the common thread through all the representations we study here is the centrality of masculine spectatorship and performance to the erotic imagination of a culture familiar with athletic display of nude bodies. The females in these scenes are of little interest, mere vehicles for cementing bonds of male homosociality.
