Abstract
The article deals with the only surviving transcript of Friedrich Schlegel’s Jena Lecture on Transcendental Philosophy, a critical analysis of which has never been undertaken and proves to be particularly difficult. Although neither the authorship nor the provenance and fate of the manuscript have been clarified, the article outlines ways and means of working out a scientifically sound judgement on the actual value of the transcript. In a first step, the transcript is analyzed by drawing conclusions about the degree of later revision. In addition, gaps and missing parts are identified which allow reliable conclusions to be drawn about the completeness and chronology of the lecture. Finally, the central question of the authenticity of the transcript is posed, the high degree of which is proven by comparison with Schlegel’s notebooks. This makes it possible to fundamentally revise the negative judgments about the transcript that have become established in Schlegel research. In addition, the special value of the transcript is shown by referring to the traces of the original oral presentation and the unusual immediacy preserved in it. Thus the article not only makes an important contribution to Schlegel research, it also shows exemplarily how a wealth of information about the underlying lecture event can be taken from lecture transcripts - even under adverse circumstances.
