Die Grotius-Vorlesung von Christian Wolff aus der Sammlung Emanuel von Graffenried

Abstract
A 5474-page manuscript entitled Praelectiones in H. Grotii Opus de J. B. et P. has been found in the library of Castle Burgistein in the Swiss canton of Bern. The manuscript contains a fluent and coherent text based on notes from a course of lectures that Christian Wolff (1679-1754) gave on De iure belli ac pacis, the seminal work by Hugo Grotius first published in Paris in 1625. Wolff first gave his lectures in Marburg in 1739/40 and was to repeat them several times from 1740 onwards after his return to Halle. The manuscript belongs to a wider collection of books established by Emanuel IV. von Graffenried (1726-1787) when he was a student attending Wolff’s lectures at the University of Halle. As a prospective lawyer, von Graffenried was interested in the application of the Wolffian philosophy to jurisprudence. Wolff’s former student Daniel Nettelbladt (1719-1791) probably played an important mediating role in stirring Graffenried’s interest in Wolff. The lectures offer an unprecedented opportunity to understand both Wolff’s Grotius interpretation and the genesis of his own theory of natural law. Wolff apparently intended to remedy the well-known and often criticized theoretical and systematic weaknesses of Grotius’s natural law, with the aim of presenting his own rationally organized complete system of natural law. An edition of the lectures is being prepared at the Interdisciplinary Center for European Enlightenment Studies in the Martin-Luther-Universitat Halle-Wittenberg in cooperation with the network Natural Law 1625-1850 at the Max Weber Centre at the University of Erfurt and with the University of Lausanne.
