Schopenhauers Versuche als Dozent. Zur Edition der Vorlesung von 1820

Abstract
Arthur Schopenhauer’s Vorlesung über Die gesamte Philosophie (Berlin, 1820) was the first and also the only lecture he held at a university. The lecture was scarcely visited and turned out to be a big failure, mainly because it took place at the same time as Georg W. F. Hegel’s lecture Logik und Metaphysik, as Schopenhauer had determined by himself in a state of overestimation of his own popularity. Ever since, Schopenhauer has often expressed his contempt for academic philosophy. Nonetheless, the Vorlesung has to be considered as an essential part of Schopenhauer’s philosophy as a whole: the lecture shows a strong link to Schopenhauer’s magnum opus, Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung, first published in 1818/19. However, the Vorlesung is an original and independent work and can be understood as a didactically modified version of Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung. It is therefore fundamentally relevant for the research of the philosophy of Schopenhauer, especially in the context of academic education. In this article, the current edition of the Vorlesung shall be introduced and described, since the few former editions are not appropriate for scholarly activity in a satisfying way.
