Abstract
First erected along the Via Egnatia, built shortly after 146 B.C. to connect Rome to the East, milestones accompanied the main repairs of the road followed by the Trajan’s or Severans’ legions fighting against Parthians. South of Macedonia, milestones appeared later, due to administrative changes (Thessaly) or by the effect of generosity of emperors like Trajan (Achaia), or Hadrian traveling in Greece. Thereafter milestones were widely reused, sometimes up to 6 or 7 times, to display allegiance of the cities to emperors who quickly succeeded each other. Last milestones followed the barbaric incursions and ravages.
