Abstract

The notions of God’s abode have undergone a profound transformation between the Babylonian and early Persian period. The example of Ezekiel’s visions (1-3; 8-11; 40-48) show that the explication of heaven as a divine abode is accompanied by Solarization of Yahweh and is to be understood against the background of Babylonian tradition. This has consequences for the redaction history of the visions. The depiction of Yahweh in Ezek 8-11* + 43,* his return to Jerusalem as sun god, cannot be separated from the portrayal in Ezek 1*, his sitting on throne like Marduk-Shamash. This speaks for an original connection of the three visions, which were probably part of a Pro-Gola-Redaction.
