16. Les communautés ibadites du nord du Sahara au Moyen Âge: espace et société dans la région de l’oued Rīgh
-
Mohamed Meouak
Abstract
This study, based on Maghrebi Ibadi sources (3rd/9th-10th/16th c.) along with geographical and historical texts, is devoted to the Saharan region of Oued Righ (wādī Rīgh). Sketching the history of such an understudied area is challenging because Oued Righ was both integrated into its Saharan environment and marginalized by historical, ecological, religious and economic circumstances. We will therefore focus on three main topics. We will first examine the position of this Saharan region within the historical context of medieval Central Maghreb. Then, we will analyze the territorial construction, taking into account the contribution of the toponymy. Finally, we will focus our attention on the Ibadi communities and local networks of this geographical area, with special attention to Berber tribes, settlement patterns, and scholarly relations, authorities and places (‛azzāba, ḥalqa, shuyūkh, etc.). This paper highlights the historical vicissitudes of a Saharan Ibadi archipelago and opens new perspectives on the neighboring regions, such as the basin of Ouargla and the Mzab valley, as well as on the complex issue of trans-Saharan trade.
