Abstract

The archaeological site of Sedrata, some kilometers south of present- day Wargla, has become a place of memory for all Ibadis of the Maghreb. Every year, the neighbouring communities from Wargla and Wadi Mzab perform a pilgrimage (ziyāra) to Sedrata and celebrate the prestigious history of one of the main cultural and economic centres of Ibadism after the conquest of Tāhart by the Fatimids in 296/909. This oasis, called Wārjlān in medieval sources, was an important stop the major Saharan trade route to Sijilmāsa between the tenth and the thirteenth century. This paper studies the organization of the local settlement and society at Wārjlān and seeks to explain the historical rupture that took place in the thirteenth century.
