Summary

Woodward’s (2003) celebrated interventionist account of causation is currently one of the most popular theories of causation and scientific (causal) explanation. The basic intuition behind this view is that causation is a matter of difference making. According to Woodward, manipulability reveals causal relations and scientific explanations are based on the manipulability relations scientists identify. This chapter outlines Woodward’s motivations, his view, and some refinements developed in response to challenges.
