Summary

Traditionally, investigating mental phenomena has been the domain of psychology- an experimental science that itself only emerged in the late 19th century. The current chapter describes how the interest of scientists studying mental phenomena has shifted towards the brain in the past 50 years or so. As a result, the field of cognitive neuroscience emerged. Today, cognitive neuroscience is a highly specialized, yet interdisciplinary, research area that employs a range of different methodologies and a plurality of descriptions to study a wide range of phenomena. Interlevel experiments have been particularly successful in advancing our knowledge of both mental phenomena and their biological bases. Hence, this is the field to look at if we want to understand how scientists explain cognitive phenomena.
