4. Linguistic Norm in Sociolinguistics

Abstract
This chapter analyzes the way linguistic norms and the issue of linguistic standard(s) have been dealt with in linguistics and sociolinguistics. After a short, chronologically organized outline of the relation of variation and norm in linguistics and the early history of sociology of language and Labovian or variationist sociolinguistics, which had an important impact on the study of norms in linguistics, this chapter deals with the main concepts of norm. Subsequently - and highlighting conceptual instead of chronological relations - this chapter further investigates the development of the concept of norm sociolinguistics established as an independent sub-discipline and its application in sociolinguistics itself and in language planning, particularly in the context of Romance languages.
