Abstract

This chapter examines the three most important phases in the development of the relationship between rhetoric and philosophy in the medieval period: the so-called ‘Christian Rhetoric’ of the Early Church Father St. Augustine; the general attitude of the Arabic philosophical tradition that tended to regard rhetoric as a more primitive and popular form of argumentation, closely associated with religion and politics, than dialectic and demonstrative science which were associated with philosophical wisdom; and the reintroduction of Aristotle’s Rhetoric into the Latin West during the scholastic period and its reception by the prominent theologian and Aristotelian commentator Giles of Rome. With Giles, we see the culmination of the preceding tradition of the relationship between philosophy, or wisdom, and the art of persuasion.
