11. Folk Linguistics and the Nostalgia of the Past City
-
Jennifer Cramer
Abstract
Folk linguistics, a subtype of ethnolinguistics, is a theoretical framework that studies the beliefs that nonlinguists have about language. This study uses a folk linguistics approach to explore the concept of nostalgia and anti-nostalgia which can be used by Louisvillians to justify the regional placement of the urban city Louisville, Kentucky. The regional identity of the city is complex with Louisvillians shifting between Southern and non-Southern identities. While there is some deprecation towards Southern varieties due to their connection to the past and certain connotations that this entails, the residents do not reject all aspects of Southernness meaning there is still a degree of nostalgia present.
