Abstract

In this chapter, I present an account of the range of views expressed in the literature on the role of the urban/rural distinction as it applies to research in sociolinguistically oriented work on language variation.1 Ideologies of the city and the countryside are examined as well as differences between the two. Geographical approaches to urbanity and rurality are considered in addition to traditional dialectologist and variationist sociolinguistic perspectives.
