Abstract

This book by authors Michael J. and Tracy A. Balboni offers a critique of the direction taken by medicine in the modern age. It is critical in the sense that, first, it identifies the shortcomings of current medical, or more generally, caregiving practice and, second, it proposes various ways (training, institutional organization, research, etc.) to correct the serious deficiencies identified. I subscribe willingly to the same critical tradition as the authors. Although I will diverge from their proposals on certain points, I agree with them that the spiritual discourse generated in Western healthcare establishments deserves critical attention, backed up by the resources of theological reflection alongside the contributions made in other fields of knowledge. I also believe that a theological critique can be constructive and help illuminate the spiritual experience during illness, leading to a fairer appraisal, by clinicians, of this facet of the experience of illness. My critical appraisal will cover the following topics: the theological assumptions underlying the Balbonis’ account of the development of medicine in the modern era, the idea of a spiritual therapy, and, finally, the spiritual anthropology that supports the structural pluralism model and its institutionalization.

Zusammenfassung

Der Beitrag diskutiert das Buch von Michael J. und Tracy A. Balboni, indem er sowohl deren Medizinkritik als auch das davon abgeleitete Reformvorhaben ins Auge fasst. Die kritische Würdigung des Buches umfasst folgende Punkte: Zunächst wird die theologische Grundierung analysiert, die der Darstellung der Entwicklung der Medizin in der Neuzeit zugrunde liegt. Diese Analyse kommt zum Schluss, dass die Balbonis ein sapiential-theologisches Verständnis der Beziehung zwischen Medizin und Religion unterstützen. Dies ist eine legitime Position, doch ist sie nicht alternativlos. Demgegenüber wird im vorliegenden Beitrag die Position vertreten, dass ein prophetisch-theologisches Verständnis auch für die kritische Aufgabe der Balbonis gut geeignet wäre, während sie sich gewissen Unzulänglichkeiten des sapientialen Modells entzieht. Zweitens wird die These der Balbonis untersucht, dass spirituelle Intervention in einer Zeit der Krankheit eine Form der spirituellen Therapie darstelle. Dieser Zugang, so wird aufgezeigt, hängt stark mit derselben Spiritualität der Immanenz zusammen, die im Zentrum des kritischen Fokus ihres eigenen Textes steht. Abschließend wirft der Beitrag einen Blick auf die spirituelle Anthropologie, die das Modell des strukturellen Pluralismus und seine Institutionalisierung abstützt. Obgleich die Balbonis hier nicht behaupten, dass es sich um ein universelles Modell handelt, so kann man doch feststellen, dass es auf einem starken kommunitaristischen Verständnis der Beziehung zwischen Spiritualität und religiösen Traditionen beruht. Demgegenüber wird betont, dass spirituelle Diskurse und Praktiken zwar immer in eine Art Tradition eingebunden sind, sich dies jedoch nicht auf „religiöse“ Traditionen beschränkt. Die „Spiritualität der Immanenz“, die im Fokus der Kritik der Autoren steht, ist selbst Teil einer modernen Tradition. Ein solches Verständnis ermöglicht es, einige Ansichten der Autoren kritisch zu hinterfragen.
