“Ukraine is United” Campaign: Public Discourse on Languages in Ukraine at a Time of Political Turmoil

Summary

The study analyzes texts associated with the media-led campaign (February-March 2014) for Ukraine’s national unity. The focus is on discourse about the language question, which gains prominence during the campaign. The texts are analyzed relying on code-switching approaches. The results lead to a discussion of bilingualism and multilingualism and its symbolic powers during political unrest. The research investigates processes of bilingualism and its legitimization in the multilingual setting of Ukraine, and questions how specific language practices and narratives about the language question participate in the legitimization of relations among and between the distinct linguistic players. The study advocates that language practices and the narratives presented in the texts associated with the campaign serve to construct a new emblem of the country, a case of an unfolding new social interaction tied to the symbolism and ‘pride’ of bilingualism and multilingualism.
