Abstract

In this paper, we distinguish between several key features of alternative left media and alt-right media, mapping eight mechanisms of slippage that we categorize into three forms: ideological discursive appropriation (postmodern subjects, the intellectual dark web, intersectionality); reversal capture (safe spaces and complaints); and commodity cooptation (mimicking underground aesthetics, astroturfing, and coordinated inauthentic behaviour online). We argue for the enduring significance of offline organization in transformative intersectional alternative media practices, where supporting strong relationships potentiates community, depth of affective labour, and positive social transformation.
