Abstract

The final verses of Ezek 20 place a striking emphasis on a theology of grace, compared with the original material of the chapter (20:1-39*) and other Ezekielian texts that call to repentance (Ezek 14:1-11; 18). Apart from Ezek 20:39-44, this emphasis on grace is present also in Ezek 16:59-63; 36:16-38 and 43:27 and marks the concluding point of an exciting process of transformation. The comparison with similar statements from Lev 26 shows the radical character of the Ezekielian theology. According to the latter, God’s gracious acceptance (Ezek 43:27) is not only the point of arrival of God’s ways; it is at the same time the point of departure for Israel’s new recognition of their own misconduct, which, as a result, elicits a profound repentance and a radical conversion.
