Nourri, d’une part, de la tradition des grands dictionnaires étymologiques romans comme le FEW et le LEI et, d’autre part, du débat paradigmatique suscité récemment par le DÉRom, le Manuel d’étymologie lexicale romane explicite les méthodes de recherche qui ont cours en étymologie romane, en distinguant lexique héréditaire, emprunts et créations internes. Ancré en linguistique romane, le manuel entre aussi en dialogue avec l’étymologie générale.

This Manual provides a concise, fact-based description of the relevant historical contact situations in the Romance language areas.

It describes the linguistic phenomena associated with each of these language contacts (e.g., Celtic, Germanic, Slavic) with reference to relevant studies, and places them within a linguistic-historical or sociolinguistic interpretive framework. In the individual chapters, relevant theories and methods (e.g., Vulgar Latin, substrata, superstrata, adstrata) are addressed, and current research trends and new approaches are reflected upon. For a deeper penetration of the topic, the handbook considers the analytical contributions of the following disciplines: etymology, semantics, creolistics, mixed language theory, colonial linguistics, missionary linguistics, individual bilingualism, code-switching, social multilingualism, migration linguistics, cultural studies, religious studies, music history, politics, and law.

The handbook is a guide for all scholars and students working in historical linguistics. Its focus is on contact situations in the period of the emergence of Romance languages and their further spread in the world.

It is evident that published, serious, science-based work in Forensic Linguistics is predominantly written in English and focuses on casework from the English-speaking world. While the first aspect is understandable – given that English serves as an international lingua franca in scientific discourse –, the second aspect presents a significant limitation for the field. Should researchers assume that there is simply less crime in non-English-speaking areas of the world? A more pertinent question might be: What cultural, disciplinary, legal, or legal-cultural factors contribute to the lack of research in (and on) languages other than English?

In addition to addressing the underrepresentation of Romance languages in scientific publications related to forensic work, the chapters in this handbook will also explore the reasons behind this unfortunate situation.

Designed to engage readers, whether they are linguists, legal professionals, or simply interested individuals, and to spark interest in Romance Forensic Linguistics, this handbook follows three key objectives: First, we are committed to providing a comprehensive overview of the casework and research conducted in (and on) several Romance languages, including Peninsular Spanish, Catalan, Brazilian Portuguese, French, Canadian French, Italian, and Romanian. Second, the chapters in this volume seek to understand why Forensic Linguistics has thrived more in some Romance-speaking countries than in others. Finally, we aim to uncover the reasons for the slower development of Forensic Linguistics in regions where Romance languages are predominantly spoken.

L'ouvrage donne une vue d'ensemble de la recherche actuelle sur les langues créoles à base française. Il propose, d'une part, une présentation comparative de ces créoles et, de l'autre, des descriptions des langues particulières. Parmi les auteurs, on trouve des chercheurs originaires à la fois des territoires créolophones et de l’extérieur du domaine.
Des sections du livre sont consacrées aux systèmes grammaticaux, au lexique, aux théories de la créolisation ou à l'histoire extra- et intralinguistique. S'y ajoutent des articles sur la situation sociolinguistique des aires franco-créoles, sur la position des langues créoles dans l'enseignement et sur leur usage écrit et littéraire.
L'ouvrage est à la fois un ouvrage d’introduction, pour les étudiants ou pour toute personne s’intéressant au sujet, et un manuel de référence pour les chercheurs et spécialistes, principalement les créolistes et les romanistes.

Virtually unstudied until the 1980s, discourse markers have gone on to become a growth industry. Research on markers is central to comprehensive theories of the synchronic linguistic system as such, of the use of language in communication, and of language change. From the very beginning, linguists working on Romance languages have been at the forefront of research on discourse markers. Including among its contributors many of the foremost experts in the field, this volume not only offers substantial state-of-the-art introductions to the diverse facets of contemporary research on discourse markers, with a focus on Romance, but it achieves added value by including in each chapter original and previously unpublished results.

The first part of the book addresses foundational issues: What are discourse markers? What is their relationship to other types of pragmatic markers? The second part considers discourse markers at different levels of linguistic description, in particular: their grammatical status, their semantics and pragmatics, their prosodic features, their positioning within discourse units. The third part outlines different approaches to the study of discourse markers, namely contrastive studies, corpus linguistics, discourse traditions, and historical linguistics. The fourth part explores discourse markers at the interface with central topics in linguistics, such as politeness, social variation, language acquisition and psycholinguistic processing. The final part focuses on discourse markers in each of the major Romance languages, namely French, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese and Romanian.

The volume will be of interest to researchers and students working in the field of Romance studies, general linguists, pragmaticians, discourse analysts, educationalists, and psychologists.

Word classes are linguistic categories serving as basis in the description of the vocabulary and grammar of natural languages. While important publications are regularly devoted to their definition, identification, and classification, in the field of Romance linguistics we lack a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of the current research. This Manual offers an updated and detailed discussion of all relevant aspects related to word classes in the Romance languages. In the first part, word classes are discussed from both a theoretical and historical point of view. The second part of the volume takes as its point of departure single word classes, described transversally in all the main Romance languages, while the third observes the relevant word classes from the point of view of specific Romance(-based) varieties. The fourth part explores Romance word classes at the interface of grammar and other fields of research.

The Manual is intended as a reference work for all scholars and students interested in the description of both the standard, major Romance languages and the smaller, lesser described Romance(-based) varieties.

Plusieurs ouvrages de synthèse sur les langues romanes tels que le Lexikon der romanistischen Linguistik ou l’Oxford Guide to the Romance Languages comportent une section sur l’occitan, mais on ne disposait pas, jusqu’à présent, d’un ouvrage traitant spécifiquement, de façon détaillée et approfondie, de la langue et de la linguistique occitanes.
Le Manuel de linguistique occitane vient combler ce manque. Il offre une vue d’ensemble incluant les recherches les plus récentes et propose une série de contributions consacrées aussi bien à la diachronie qu’à la description synchronique de la langue, à la variation diatopique, aux questions de sociolinguistique, d’aménagement et d’équipement linguistique, à l’enseignement et à la pédagogie de l’occitan.

Ce manuel constitue un ouvrage de référence pour quiconque s'intéresse à la linguistique occitane et romane, il s'adresse aussi bien à des étudiants qu'à des enseignants ou à des chercheurs confirmés.

Loin de désigner génériquement différentes formes de métalangage, la linguistique populaire constitue aujourd’hui un domaine propre, qui englobe les représentations et pratiques épi- et métalinguistiques (perceptions, savoirs, discours, interventions, etc.) des locuteur·trice·s « ordinaires » ou non-linguistes – situés hors du champ scientifique ou de contextes hégémoniques institutionnalisés – ainsi que, au niveau méta, l’étude de ces représentations et pratiques.

Le présent manuel envisage d’abord la linguistique populaire d’un point de vue historiographique, théorique et méthodologique : il interroge notamment la délimitation entre « linguistes » et « non-linguistes » et examine en détail les défis liés à la collecte de données. L’ouvrage explore ensuite les rapports entre la linguistique populaire et les domaines linguistiques limitrophes tels que la traductologie, la didactique et la lexicographie. This handbook provides a systematic overview firstly of the basic concepts and secondly of current research topics and trends in Applied Romance Linguistics from a theoretical, methodological and empirical perspective. It takes account of both traditional and innovative research approaches. Following a general introduction to the field and its major topics, methods and objectives, the presentation is divided into four thematic sections (methods and methodology; language, society and knowledge; language acquisition and language education; specialised communication and transfer).

The volume is geared towards researchers, teachers and students working in the fields of linguistic and communication studies, but also addresses the general public. It aims to provide useful information for anyone dealing with problems of language and communication in their professional or private lives, and illustrates career options for graduates of Romance Linguistics.

With more than two thousand languages spread over its territory, multilingualism is a common reality in Africa. The main official languages of most African countries are Indo-European, in many instances Romance. As they were primarily brought to Africa in the era of colonization, the areas discussed in this volume are thirty-five states that were once ruled by Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal, or Spain, and the African regions still belonging to three of them. Twenty-six states are presented in relation to French, four to Italian, six to Portuguese, and two to Spanish. They are considered in separate chapters according to their sociolinguistic situation, linguistic history, external language policy, linguistic characteristics, and internal language policy. The result is a comprehensive overview of the Romance languages in modern-day Africa. It follows a coherent structure, offers linguistic and sociolinguistic information, and illustrates language contact situations, power relations, as well as the cross-fertilization and mutual enrichment emerging from the interplay of languages and cultures in Africa.

This manual provides a detailed presentation of the various Romance languages as they appear in texts written by Jews, mostly using the Hebrew alphabet. It gives a comprehensive overview of the Jews and the Romance languages in the Middle Ages (part I), as well as after the expulsions (part II). These sections are dedicated to Judaeo-Romance texts and linguistic traditions mainly from Italy, northern and southern France (French and Occitan), and the Iberian Peninsula (Catalan, Spanish, Portuguese). The Judaeo-Spanish varieties of the 20th and 21st centuries are discussed in a separate section (part III), due to the fact that Judaeo-Spanish can be considered an independent language. This section includes detailed descriptions of its phonetics/phonology, morphology, lexicon, and syntax.

Discourse Traditions are a key concept of diachronic Romance linguistics. The present manual aims to establish this approach at an international level by assembling contributions that introduce its theoretical foundations, discuss connections with alternative approaches of text and discourse analysis, show the relevance of Discourse Traditions for the history of Romance languages, and explore possibilities for future applications of the concept.

Au sens large, le concept de modalité désigne l’éventail des attitudes qu’un locuteur peut adopter envers le contenu propositionnel d’un énoncé. Après avoir introduit les différentes orientations théoriques de la recherche à ce sujet – approches fonctionnelles, sémantique formelle, grammaire générative, linguistique cognitive et constructionnelle –, le présent manuel détaille les moyens d’expression de la modalité dans les différentes langues romanes : le système des modes, en premier lieu, mais aussi les verbes modaux, adverbes, adjectifs et périphrases de modalité, ou encore l’intonation. Certaines questions diachroniques, comme celle du développement des modes et de leur représentation au plan grammaticographique, sont aussi traitées. Enfin, la modalité est abordée du point de vue de ses intersections avec les catégories voisines de temporalité, aspect, évidentialité, polyphonie ou jugement du locuteur. L’ouvrage offre ainsi une description approfondie des modes et modalités en langues romanes, qui rend compte des recherches les plus récentes et des problématiques émergentes en ce domaine.

En el Manual de lingüística del hablar se presenta el estado actual de la investigación sobre el discurso y la comunicación en el espacio de las lenguas románicas. El lector podrá acceder de una forma sencilla y clara a los principales objetos de estudio de una amplia gama de disciplinas y ramas de la Lingüística, como la Pragmática, el Análisis del Discurso, la Teoría de la comunicación, la Lingüística del texto o la Filología.

El Manual supone un esfuerzo colectivo para explicar problemas teóricos complejos, concernientes a la comunicación, al discurso y a sus productos, los textos. Las descripciones contrastivas en lenguas románicas sirven para mostrar el alcance de las posiciones teóricas y para enriquecer las explicaciones con ejemplos para un lector con intereses distintos y atraído por lenguas diferentes. Asimismo, contiene análisis sobre formas de aplicación y transferencia de la investigación acerca del hablar en distintas áreas específicas y profesionales.

This handbook is structured in two parts: it provides, on the one hand, a comprehensive (synchronic) overview of the phonetics and phonology (including prosody) of a breadth of Romance languages and focuses, on the other hand, on central topics of research in Romance segmental and suprasegmental phonology, including comparative and diachronic perspectives.

Phonetics and phonology have always been a core discipline in Romance linguistics: the wide synchronic variety of languages and dialects derived from spoken Latin is extensively explored in numerous corpus and atlas projects, and for quite a few of these varieties there is also more or less ample documentation of at least some of their diachronic stages. This rich empirical database offers excellent testing grounds for different theoretical approaches and allows for substantial insights into phonological structuring as well as into (incipient, ongoing, or concluded) processes of phonological change.

The volume can be read both as a state-of-the-art report of research in the field and as a manual of Romance languages with special emphasis on the key topics of phonetics and phonology.

Questo manuale – il primo dedicato specificamente al ladino brissino-tirolese – vuole fornire sia un quadro d’insieme attualizzato riguardo ai vari aspetti tradizionali della ricerca sul ladino (storia linguistica interna e esterna, caratteristiche linguistiche, classificazione), sia dare conto di ambiti di ricerca nuovi nella ladinistica, tra l’altro la linguistica dei corpus, la neurolinguistica, la didattica del ladino in un contesto plurilingue oppure il ladino nei mass-media e nei social network. Il volume è organizzato attorno a tre blocchi tematici. Il primo presenta il ladino in quanto sistema linguistico con le sue caratteristiche in sincronia e diacronia. Il secondo è focalizzato sul ladino in quanto mezzo di comunicazione e simbolo identitario della etnia che lo parla. Questa particolare identità è caratterizzata almeno dalla Seconda Guerra Mondiale in poi anche da un grado di plurilinguismo molto elevato, descritto nei suoi vari aspetti. Il terzo blocco è dedicato al ladino in quanto oggetto di studio linguistico. Il volume si conclude con due indici, degli autori citati e dei concetti trattati.

This manual is intended to fill a gap in the area of Romance studies. There is no introduction available so far that broadly covers the field of Catalan linguistics, neither in Catalan nor in any other language. The work deals with the language spoken in Catalonia and Andorra, the Balearic Islands, the region of Valencia, Northern Catalonia and the town of l'Alguer in Sardinia. Besides introducing the ideologies of language and nation and the history of Catalan linguistics, the manual is divided into separate parts embracing the description – grammar, lexicon, variation and varieties – and the history of the language since the early medieval period to the present day. It also covers its current social and political situation in the new local and global contexts. The main emphasis is placed on modern Catalan.

The manual is designed as a companion for students of Catalan, while also introducing specialists of other languages into this field, in particular scholars of Romance languages.

Language standardization is an ongoing process based on the notions of linguistic correctness and models. This manual contains thirty-six chapters that deal with the theories of linguistic norms and give a comprehensive up-to-date description and analysis of the standardization processes in the Romance languages.

The first section presents the essential approaches to the concept of linguistic norm ranging from antiquity to the present, and includes individual chapters on the notion of linguistic norms and correctness in classical grammar and rhetoric, in the Prague School, in the linguistic theory of Eugenio Coseriu, in sociolinguistics as well as in pragmatics, cognitive and discourse linguistics.

The second section focuses on the application of these notions with respect to the Romance languages. It examines in detail the normative grammar and the normative dictionary as the reference tools for language codification and modernization of those languages that have a long and well-established written tradition, i.e. Romanian, Italian, French, Catalan, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Furthermore, the volume offers a discussion of the key issues regarding the standardization of the ‘minor’ Romance languages as well as Creoles.

This manual provides an extensive overview of the importance and use of Romance languages in the media, both in a diachronic and synchronic perspective.

Its chapters discuss language in television and the new media, the language of advertising, or special cases such as translation platforms or subtitling.

Separate chapters are dedicated to minority languages and smaller varieties such as Galician and Picard, and to methodological approaches such as linguistic discourse analysis and writing process research.

Diffusé dans le monde entier, implanté dans des environnements nouveaux, le français s’est trouvé en contact avec d’autres langues qui l’ont influencé à différents degrés dans son évolution et son épanouissement. Cet ouvrage propose un panorama des modalités d'existence diverses auxquelles ces interactions ont donné naissance dans l'Hexagone et en dehors. Après deux exposés généraux, vingt-neuf contributions présentent chacune une zone spécifique pour en décrire la situation sociolinguistique historique et actuelle, les politiques d’aménagement linguistique externe et interne, ainsi que les particularités du français qui y est pratiqué. This manual is the first comprehensive account of Brazilian Portuguese linguistics written in English, offering not only linguists but also historians and social scientists new insights gained from the intensive research carried out over the last decades on the linguistic reality of this vast territory.

In the 20 overview chapters, internationally renowned experts give detailed yet concise information on a wide range of language-internal as well as external synchronic and diachronic topics. Most of this information is the fruit of large-scale language documentation and description projects, such as the project on the linguistic norm of educated speakers (NURC), the project “Grammar of spoken Portuguese”, and the project “Towards a History of Brazilian Portuguese” (PHPB), among others. Further chapters of high contemporary interest and relevance include the study of linguistic policies and psycholinguistics.

The manual offers theoretical insights of general interest, not least since many chapters present the linguistic data in the light of a combination of formal, functional, generative and sociolinguistic approaches. This rather unique feature of the volume is achieved by the double authorship of some of the relevant chapters, thus bringing together and synthesizing different perspectives.

The Manual of Galician Linguistics provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of the current situation of the Galician language and introduces its readers to the most important topics of current linguistic research on Galician. Chapters cover diachronic and synchronic descriptions of all main areas of language structure (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicology), as well social and regional variation, language contact and other interesting areas of linguistic research.

Rich in descriptive details and grounded in modern linguistic theory, this manual is an essential research tool for students and researchers who are interested in the Galician language and in Romance linguistics.

The Romance languages offer a particularly fertile ground for the exploration of the relationship between language and society in different social contexts and communities. Focusing on a wide range of Romance languages – from national languages to minoritised varieties – this volume explores questions concerning linguistic diversity and multilingualism, language contact, medium and genre, variation and change. It will interest researchers and policy-makers alike.

This volume offers theoretically informed surveys of topics that have figured prominently in morphosyntactic and syntactic research into Romance languages and dialects. We define syntax as being the linguistic component that assembles linguistic units, such as roots or functional morphemes, into grammatical sentences, and morphosyntax as being an umbrella term for all morphological relations between these linguistic units, which either trigger morphological marking (e.g. explicit case morphemes) or are related to ordering issues (e.g. subjects precede finite verbs whenever there is number agreement between them). All 24 chapters adopt a comparative perspective on these two fields of research, highlighting cross-linguistic grammatical similarities and differences within the Romance language family. In addition, many chapters address issues related to variation observable within individual Romance languages, and grammatical change from Latin to Romance.

Este manual apresenta o estado atual da investigação em linguística portuguesa, combinando abordagens panorâmicas e análises detalhadas de tópicos selecionados. O volume articula dados diacrónicos e sincrónicos, do português padrão e dialetal, da gramática do adulto e da aquisição de L1, explorando propriedades gramaticais características do português através dos métodos e teorias da linguística contemporânea.

Os capítulos panorâmicos integram áreas de investigação que tiveram nas últimas décadas um desenvolvimento significativo no âmbito da linguística portuguesa (e.g. línguas em contacto, prosódia, léxico computacional, fonética forense).

Os capítulos dedicados a tópicos de sintaxe, semântica e fonologia oferecem dados empíricos novos e análises atuais de aspetos do português como o infinitivo flexionado, o padrão de colocação dos pronomes clíticos, o conjuntivo, a redução das vogais átonos, a par de temas mais recentes, como os sujeitos nulos, os complexos verbais, o sistema responsivo, alguns fenómenos dialetais.

Globalmente, trata-se de uma coleção única de artigos, especificamente concebida como Manual de Linguística Portuguesa destinado ao contexto académico. Os autores são destacados especialistas nas matérias estudadas.

Oltre un’introduzione dettagliata al contesto storico-sociale della situazione linguistica in Sardegna, il volume contiene descrizioni sincroniche e diacroniche di tutti i settori dei sistemi linguistici, sia delle varietà sarde in senso stretto che delle varietà alloglotte dell’isola. Questo Manuale costituisce, cioè, un lavoro di riferimento obbligato per chiunque si occupi della lingua e della linguistica sarda.

El Manual de lingüística española está concebido como una obra que proporcione una visión general, a la vez que suficientemente detallada, de la investigación lingüística actual sobre el español.

La obra incluye un conjunto de aportaciones dedicadas tanto a la diacronía del español como a la descripción sincrónica de la lengua en todas sus facetas. Igualmente incorpora capítulos sobre gramaticografía, lexicografía y sobre la adquisición del español, tanto como lengua primera como segunda. En cada capítulo se busca seleccionar las cuestiones centrales del tema tratado para exponerlas con concisión, pero sin renunciar a la profundidad y al rigor científico.

Los autores son destacados especialistas de cada uno de los asuntos de que se ocupan y se ha procurado la mayor coordinación entre ellos para que no se repitan contenidos y tampoco queden sin tratar aspectos importantes de la descripción lingüistica del español.

Questo Manuale di linguistica italiana intende fornire un quadro d’insieme aggiornato (in particolare post 1988) sulla lingua italiana e anche dare conto di ricerche e ambiti maggiormente esplorati negli ultimi venti anni come, in diacronia, le scriptae italo-romanze, l’italiano fuori d’Italia (dal Medioevo a oggi), le varietà d’italiano nel passato, la sintassi dell’italiano antico.

Il volume è suddiviso in tre sezioni: l’italiano nella storia; l’italiano contemporaneo; i luoghi della codificazione / le questioni / gli sviluppi recenti della ricerca. Nella seconda sezione un capitolo sull’italiano di oggi illustra i tratti più significativi della lingua che cambia (a sé è trattata la morfologia con la formazione delle parole), mentre molto articolata è la parte dedicata all’italiano variazionale la cui architettura è più complessa rispetto a pochi decenni fa dato il quadro sociolinguistico notevolmente mutato e l’influsso significativo dei media anche sui fatti di lingua. Alcuni settori hanno avuto inoltre un incremento notevole di studio: la pragmatica, la linguistica testuale, la linguistica dei corpora, come del resto anche la didattica dell’italiano, che si è consolidata anche nella prospettiva della L2 grazie a importanti studi di linguistica acquisizionale.

La langue de spécialité se définit soit par les contenus spécialisés qu’elle exprime, soit par un sous-système qui vient s’ajouter au système non-marqué.

En effet, chaque domaine spécialisé exige, tout naturellement, une création terminologique propre. En plus, les traditions discursives divergent d’un domaine spécialisé à l’autre. L’expression spécialisée est condamnée à obéir à ces deux contraintes.

Le terme de «langue de spécialité» désigne en même temps un style de langue; sans différencier entre les spécialités, celui-ci s’oppose aux autres styles par l’application additionnelle de certains types d’élaboration syntaxique; cette observation s’inscrit en faux contre l’habituel diagnostic d’une syntaxe défective. Une étude fréquentielle prouve le bien-fondé de l’analyse. L’emploi de ce sous-système est fort expansif également en dehors des langues romanes.

La langue de spécialité est conçue sous deux angles de vue: d’une part, elle est l’expression de contenus spécialisés dont elle épouse la multiformité. D’autre part, elle se définit par des marques syntaxiques ou nominatives qui l’opposent à d’autres styles, franchissant les limites des domaines spécialisés et aussi celle des langues. Une dernière section de ce Manuel en retrace l’évolution pas toujours rectiligne depuis l’Antiquité.

Different components of grammar interact in non-trivial ways. It has been under debate what the actual range of interaction is and how we can most appropriately represent this in grammatical theory. Par rapport aux autres manuels disponibles sur le marché (le Lexikon der Romanistischen Linguistik, la Romanische Sprachgeschichte et le Handbuch Französisch), ce manuel apporte des informations supplémentaires et actualisées.

Le présent manuel entend dresser un bilan actualisé des bases de documentation relatives aux différentes langues romanes. Il contient une description critique des anthologies établies dans une perspective linguistique et des corpus (électroniques et autres) réalisés. Cette description envisage autant les langues standard qu’un choix délibéré des variantes diatopiques et diastratiques les plus particularisées. Une section spécifique est consacrée aux langues créoles lexifiées à partir des langues romanes. Toutes les langues romanes et leurs variantes retenues s’accompagnent de textes commentés et sélectionnés en fonction de leur représentativité.

Ce manuel compte ainsi fournir un aperçu général du développement de toutes langues romanes vivantes et de leurs variétés à partir des premières mises à l’écrit.

Deixis as a field of research has generated increased interest in recent years. It is crucial for a number of different subdisciplines: pragmatics, semantics, cognitive and contrastive linguistics, to name just a few. The subject is of particular interest to experts and students, philosophers, teachers, philologists, and psychologists interested in the study of their language or in comparing linguistic structures.

The different deictic structures – not only the items themselves, but also the oppositions between them – reflect the fact that neither the notions of space, time, person nor our use of them are identical cross-culturally. This diversity is not restricted to the difference between languages, but also appears among related dialects and language varieties.

This volume will provide an overview of the field, focusing on Romance languages, but also reaching beyond this perspective. Chapters on diachronic developments (language change), comparisons with other (non-)European languages, and on interfaces with neighboring fields of interest are also included.

The editors and authors hope that readers, regardless of their familiarity with Romance languages, will gain new insights into deixis in general, and into the similarities and differences among deictic structures used in the languages of the world.

L’ouvrage ne se veut ni manuel d’initiation à la traduction ni introduction systématique à la traductologie; il s’agit plutôt d’un ‹Handbuch› au sens de la collection Handbücher für Sprach-und Kommunikationswissenschaft (HSK). Son objectif est de faire le point, voire de pousser plus avant la réflexion sur la recherche en traduction entre langues romanes, sans exclure a priori les traductions dans d’autres langues.

Pour ce faire, on a pris en compte les multiples aspects de la problématique de la traduction: aspects théoriques (p.ex. concepts de base, rapports entre linguistique et traductologie, types et modèles de traduction et d’interprétation), linguistiques (lexique, syntaxe, phraséologie, prosodie), discursifs et pragmatiques (cohésion, progression thématique, contexte et situation, genres), historiques (rôle du latin) et pratiques (formation des traducteurs, questions juridiques, doublage et sous-titrages de films).

S’adressant aux étudiants avancés et aux chercheurs, l’ouvrage témoigne de la vitalité de la recherche traductologique actuelle dans les langues romanes.

L’édition de textes, surtout du Moyen Âge, fournit le point de départ pour une bonne partie de la linguistique historique. C’est ainsi que l’importance des méthodes éditoriales va bien au-delà d’une considération théorique et qui se limiterait aux praticiens de l’édition.

Le but du volume sera de présenter d’une part, la gamme des méthodes utilisées par les éditeurs, à côté d’un certain nombre de cas de figure, et accompagnée par des études portant sur les activités annexes de l’édition de textes comme la glossairistique ou encore, le compte rendu. Le but sera de résumer l’activité éditrice telle qu’elle se pratique de nos jours, mais sans perdre de vue ses origines. Seront ainsi présentées la tradition du texte critique (dit lachmannien), qui continue à être pratiquée surtout en Italie; celle plus bédiériste qui domine en France; et l’édition électronique qui élargit le concept même d’édition pour permettre des liens avec un manuscrit numérise. Le fonctionnement des consignes d’édition et les variantes en stemmatologie seront également traités, avec un excursus vers le XVII^e siècle, où la modernisation est encore d’usage. Enfin, deux cas difficiles – l’édition de textes occitans et français en caractères hébreux – seront abordés.

Vengono esaminati in maniera approfondita anche aspetti sociolinguistici e di politica linguistica, come p.e. problemi legati alla normalizzazione, con particolare attenzione alla grafia, all’attività lessicografica, all’utilizzo del friulano nei (nuovi) media e alla didattica.

Spécialistes dans ces domaines, les auteurs se sont efforcés de retracer brièvement le chemin parcouru ces dernières décennies pour présenter plus en détail la situation actuelle. Appartenant à plusieurs générations de romanistes, ils ont eu toute liberté quant à la méthodologie et au concept utilisés dans leurs contributions.
