The issues of accountability and increased public concern have contributed to widespread institutional self-examination and to a greater emphasis placed on assessing the impact of college attendance. This study focuses on 36 items in the ACT College Outcomes Survey to identify specific areas of personal and social gain where students percieved colleges to have the greatest impact. Identification of these general constructs provides guidance for college administrators and faculty members on areas where the colleges can focus their attention to achieve their greatest impact.

The authors describe the process by which one university considered the development of a multicultural student union and the research project that was undertaken to gain information from all campus constituencies concerning the interest in such a union and the perception of its function. This article reports on the student responses gathered in telephone interviews. The procedure and results will provide guidelines for other institutions when considering the development of multicultural student unions.

This is an optimistic, and useful, book written at a pessimistic time. In an era when the nation faces many social problems - including alienation from the government and work, the fragmentation of the family, and an expanding materialism - this book promoting civic literacy approaches to service learning and seeks to help educators in their efforts to redefine the role of civics in contemporary society. The civic literacy approach to service learning is defined as pedagogy that combines community service and academic instruction and that focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsiblity. The editors challenge community colleges to act as catalysts for a national movement of community renewal, suggesting that they may be our best hope for finding ways to solve our social problems.

This volume of 31 articles is the first in The Drucker Foundation's Future Series, designed to present "the latest and best thinking in the world on the future of leadership, organization, change, and innovation" (p. xxv). In its forward, entitled "Not Enough Generals Were Killed," Peter Drucker states that the book "can - and should - be read as the definitive text on the subject" (p. xiv). With similar modesty, the editors state that "we have done our best to provide you with the latest thinking from many of the top minds of the field" (p. xxi).

This paper explores the complexities involved in transferring psychological services to off-campus providers. The ethical and legal responsibilities of colleges and universities to provide services that encourage the development of the student may not be met by health care entrepreneurs who do not take into account differences between the needs of college students and those of members the larger society.

Sexual relationships between faculty members and students, a form of sexual harassment, can be damaging to the student, the faculty member, and the academic community. Considerations of issues of power, entitlement, and responsibility are essential to understanding and change. This article examines the issues and dynamics involved and describes a comprehensive educational intervention model that has been developed for each of the constituent groups.

The author reviews the history of pledging and the recent movements for reform of this practice among historically Black fraternities and sororities. He describes the membership intake process that has been adopted and its resultant problems, and suggests that the national leadership should emphasize the founding ideals of the organizations as a means of overcoming resistance to change.
