Some Observations on the Szilard-Chalmers Process in Dichromates

Summary

The initial retentions of samples of monoclinic and triclinic potassium dichromate, irradiated under the same conditions, were found to be 82.4 and 89.5% respectively. Monoclinic solid solutions of K2Cr2O7 in (NH4)2Cr2O7, in the range 0-65 mole% of K2Cr2O7, gave initial retentions which were a smooth, though not linear, function of the composition. The curve could be extrapolated to the value found for the metastable pure monoclinic K2Cr2O7. Unlike (NH4)2Cr2O7, the tetramethyl ammonium salt did not show a decrease in retention on irradiation with ultraviolet light. The photolytic decrease in retention in the ammonium salt does not appear to be thermally reversible.

An entirely non-aqueous method of determining the retention in ammonium dichromate gave the same value as the aqueous procedure.
