Summary
The half-life of 220Rn has been measured by a new technique. Radon atoms were embedded firmly in stainless steel plates by the collection in vacuum of recoiling atoms from a thin source of 224Ra. The activity on these plates was counted in a proportional counter using a 400-channel analyzer as a multiscaler. The average half-life obtained for eleven determinations was 55.3 ± 0.3 seconds. A discussion of some of the errors possible in the various methods of measuring the radon half-life is presented.
