Observations on Spur Reactions in the Liquid Phase γ-Radiolysis

Summary

Propane and butane formation is observed in the liquid phase γ-radiolysis of mixtures of methyl with ethyl halide; butane and ethane formation occurs when mixtures of methyl with n-propyl iodide are irradiated. The G-values for these products are not affected by ≦ 10-2 moles/1 DPPH. These observations and the dependence of G (recombination products) on the composition of the mixtures strongly suggest that these hydrocarbons are formed by diffusion-controlled recombination in spurs.
