Zusammenfassung Von der klassischen Formgeschichte bis zur Gegenwart herrschte die Auffassung vor, dass es sich beim Q-Logion Lk 17,37//Mt 24,28 um eine Art Sprichwort handelt, das in der späten hellenistischen Zeit weit verbreitet war. Obwohl viele Analogien genannt wurden, fehlte es bisher an Beweisen in Form von eindeutigen Parallelen. Infolgedessen stieß die Annahme eines Sprichworts auf Skepsis (§ 1). Entgegen dieser Skepsis wird Lk 17,37//Mt 24,28 in diesem Aufsatz auf ein Sprichwort zurückgeführt, das in Plutarch, Moralia 918C und Lukrez, De rerum natura IV 679–680 erhalten ist. Although Mark 10,25 is widely regarded as a prototypical example of hyperbole, the reasons for this are often unspecified. That is problematic. In what follows, modern and ancient discussions of hyperbole will be used in an attempt to resolve the problem. Relevance theory assumes that hyperbole comprises both a scalar (saying more or less about something than is the case) and an expressive (i.e. evaluative/emotional) quality. To be successful, the hearer must distinguish between the propositional meaning (the more or less that is said about something) and the intended meaning (what is accepted as the case). Ancient discussions recognize the scalar and expressive qualities of hyperbole, but add a further consideration, namely, the linguistic features employed in its construction. This article concludes that Mark 10,25 was understood literally by the disciples, but that it displays the features necessary to qualify as hyperbolic, and that it was undoubtedly understood that way by Mark’s readers. The disciples’ misunderstanding is used by the evangelist to lead the dialogue into a consideration of the importance of divine goodness for salvation.

Zusammenfassung Die numerische Inkongruenz zwischen einem Subjekt im Singular und einem Verb im Plural, die für das Nomen λαός häufig belegt ist, wird bei der Deutung von Lk 20,19 gemeinhin nicht berücksichtigt. Zusammenfassung Dieser Aufsatz befasst sich mit der angemessenen Übersetzung der Rede von „festgesetzten Zeiten“ (καιροί) in Apg 17,26, insbesondere im Rahmen der Areopag-Rede des Paulus. This study puts forward the thesis that the heavenly ascent in 2Cor 12,2–4 is a sarcastic parody of Paul’s Corinthian opponents. This view modifies and combines the minority views of Hans Dieter Betz (1972), that the account is a self-parody, and of Michael D. Goulder (2003), that it is written of someone other than Paul. Drawing on Matthew Pawlak’s recent work on Paul’s use of sarcasm (2023) and through critical comparison of both Jewish apocalyptic texts and Graeco-Roman use of illeism, the article argues that a sarcastic interpretation of the heavenly ascent not only makes greater rhetorical sense in its immediate context but also resolves problems that the standard interpretation of this ascent creates for Pauline theology.

In this article, the consequential dispute with Kephas in Antioch, as Paul relates it in Gal 2,11–14, is examined primarily in the light of the language of the documentary papyri and inscriptions. The focus is not on theological or chronological questions, but – from a reader-oriented perspective – on the way the narrative might have been received by the addressees of the letter. The bylaws of selected ancient associations with various measures against inappropriate behavior during meetings serve to place the incident in the appropriate cultural context. With regard to the divisions caused by Kephas and Paul’s fierce reaction, the question is asked whether the pragmatic intention of the author and the reception on the part of the addressees necessarily corresponded or whether a more complex communication situation should be assumed.

New Testament scholars discussing irony have for decades invoked a character dynamic from Greek Old Comedy between the εἴρων and the ἀλαζών, the dissembler and the braggart, to explain the relationship between different characters in the Gospels and Paul’s letters. This article investigates the validity of this dynamic by analyzing its source: The Tractatus Coislinianus , a 10 th century manuscript that claims to summarize Aristotle’s lost work on comedy ( Poetics II ). The article uses Aristotle, including Poetics I , Rhetoric , and the Nicomachean Ethics , in addition to Old Comedy and Cicero to determine the likelihood that the εἴρων/ἀλαζών dynamic has its roots in Aristotelean thought and Old Comedy as described in the tractatus and argued in scholarship.
